Choose Your Thoughts Wisely
As I have said in this post, we should choose your thoughts wisely. Our predominant thoughts will slowly manifest themselves as time goes by. So if we want positive results, we should focus on the bright side of things.
We can never really go wrong with an optimistic outlook in life. It will make us see the bright side of things even in our darkest days. We will see these moments and experiences as stepping stones rather than as stumbling blocks.
So we should focus on the positive no matter what. We should never lose hope. It really ain’t over till it’s over. For as long as we are alive, there is hope. So we should keep on going. We should keep on fighting. We will see the fruits of our labor someday. 😊
A Lot Of Things Depend On It
A lot of things depends on our outlook in life, our success, our happiness, our health, our well-being and so on. This is why we must foster the right kind of mindset early on in our journeys.
If you are not convinced yet, hopefully, these quotes from Bruce Lee will do just that:
“You will never get any more out of life than you expect. Every man today is the result of his thoughts of yesterday.”– Bruce Lee
Choose the positive. You have choice, you are master of your attitude, choose the positive, the constructive. Optimism is a faith that leads to success.– Bruce Lee
Man’s mind and his behavior are one, his inner thought and outer expression cannot contradict each other. Therefore a man should set up his right principle, and this right mind (principle) will influence his action.– Bruce Lee
“I’ve always been buffeted by circumstances because I thought of myself as a human being [affected] outside conditioning. Now I realise that I am the power that commands the feeling of my mind and from which circumstances grow.”– Bruce Lee
A Powerful Entity
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, either way you are right.”– Henry Ford
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so he shall be.”– James Allen
Your mind is a powerful entity. It’s like a sponge. It absorbs everything that you feed it with. This is why you must be very careful. You must filter your thoughts. Don’t allow negativity to creep in. Cut its roots before it takes root in your heart and mind. Just like how the little prince weed out the seeds of baobabs in his little planet.
As with all planets, there are good plants and bad plants that grow within them. Good seeds bear good fruits/plants while bad seeds bear bad fruits/plants. The same is true with our thoughts. Good thoughts bear good results while bad thoughts bear bad results. This is common sense, but as Stephen Covey have shared in his best-selling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, “what is common sense is not always common practice.” This is why we need to be constantly reminded of these simple yet often neglected and overlooked facts of life. Don’t worry, that’s what this blog is here for. 😊
Life Lessons From The Baobabs
“Before they grow so big, the baobabs start out by being little.”– The little prince in The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
As for the little prince’s planet, the baobabs were the bad plants within them. And one must get rid of them before they can even take root. As the little prince have remarked, “there is no harm in putting off a piece of work until another day. But when it is a matter of baobabs, that always means catastrophe.” The author also remarked that a baobab is “something you will never, never be able to get rid of if you attend to it too late.”
Seeds Are Invisible
As the author have remarked, seeds are invisible. “They sleep deep in the heart of of the earth’s darkness, until some one among them is seized with the desire to awaken.” He also added that these little seeds will stretch themselves. Timidly at first. Then slowly, they will begin to push “a charming little sprig inoffensively upward toward the sun.” If it’s a good plant, you can let it grow as much as you want. Provided that there is enough space for it. But when the plant is bad, as the author have remarked, “one must destroy it as soon as possible, the very first instant that one recognizes it.”
What Can We Learn From This Story?
Just like how seeds are invisible, the “seeds” that we plant in our hearts and minds are also invisible. But over time, they will grow bigger and bigger. Until it is too late for us to weed them out – in the case of bad thoughts.
That’s the reason why we must be very wary of our thoughts. We might think that they are harmless at first, but you know, as with the seeds, they will grow bigger over time. This is why you can’t let a bad “plant” take root in your heart and mind. Because that will cause you problems later on. So choose your thoughts wisely.
It’s Really The Journey, Not The Destination
No matter what the result of your journey/endeavor may be, with a positive mindset, you will always end up happy with it. You’ve fought a good fight. In life, sometimes we win, sometimes we learn. If we end up not achieving our desired end, we are not disheartened because we know that success is a journey not a destination.
That is what the right kind of mindset will teach you over and over again. Instead of being discouraged, we will see these losses as stepping stones rather than as stumbling blocks. The lessons that we have learned from them will make us better in our future endeavors. So when you really think about it, losses are blessings in disguise.
Yes they hurt at first. Nobody wants to lose you know, no mattet what the activity is. But you see, these losses teach us lessons that wouldn’t have been available to us otherwise. So don’t feel bad about losing. Because these losses are catapults towards personal growth – which, if you ask me is success in and of itself. Why? Because they will teach you to better over time. Now isn’t that one of formulas for success – that is relentlessly seeking improvements in whatever it is that we do?
It’s Okay To Fail
“Don’t fear failure. — Not failure, but low aim, is the crime. In great attempts it is glorious even to fail.”– Bruce Lee
That’s why it’s okay to fail. Don’t fear failure. As Bruce Lee have said, “don’t fear failure. — Not failure, but low aim, is the crime. In great attempts it is glorious even to fail.” In life, sometimes we win, sometimes we learn. What is important is that we learned from our our mistakes.
When you fail, give your self time to recover and then move on. Lamenting and ruminating over our loss will not do us any good. They will only make us worry. And worrying is not good. Worrying for a long time will eventually lead you to doubt yourself. And doubting yourself is not good either. If your doubts and fears will gain control over you then you will never be able to move on from your loss. They will paralyze you. And that is not good. That is not productive.
That’s why don’t dwell on a problem/loss for that long. They will only make you doubt yourself. And that is not good. Like what I’ve said in this blog entry, doubts and fears will kill your dreams before you can even have the chance to realize them.
So stay away from that situation. Focus on the positive instead. Focus on the bright side of things. Focus on what wil bring you closer toward your goals and aspirations in life. That will bring you closer to them, not your doubts and fears.
Balance Is The Key
“Nourish your hopes, but do not overlook realities.”– Winston Churchill
But stay away from blind optimism. Blind optimism is just as bad as being overly pessimistic. Anything that is in excess is bad. You should also be grounded in reality. You should know when to stop, when call it quits, and when to call it a day. When things aren’t working, you should try a different approach and move in a different direction.
When To Quit?
“Good logic, sound principles, and strong belief are the purest and most productive reasons for pushing forward when things get rough.”– Bill Walsh
The question is when? When should someone quit? That’s a difficult question. As Bill Walsh have said, “there is no answer; there is no cut-and-dried formula.” But for one, don’t let your ego or your will get in the way. Quit when quitting is better than staying on the path. When it’s more beneficial to you and to those around you. Quit when quitting is more logical and sound. Be wrong for the right reasons.
As Bill Walsh have shared in his book The Score Takes Care Of Itself, if a decision or a plan of action is based on good logic, sound principles, and strong belief, ” I felt comfortable in being unswerving in moving toward my goal.” It is of paramount importance that you proceed and persist for the correct reasons. “Your tactics must be sound and based on logic seasoned with instinct”, he remarked.
The Effort Rather Than The End Result
“Do your work. Do it well. Then “let go and let God.” That’s all there needs to be.”– Ryan Holiday
Sometimes, even if we did everything that we can, we will still fall short. And that’s alright. Don’t let that deter you. We should focus our efforts on what is within our control and leave the rest to the Almighty.
What is within our control are our efforts. While the end results are way beyond our control. This is why we should tie ourselves to our efforts rather than the end result. The effort is enough. The end result is really just a cherry on top. It’s important but not as important as our efforts. As Ryan Holiday have shared in his book Ego Is The Enemy:
“It’s far better when doing good work is sufficient. In other words, the less attached we are to outcomes the better. When fulfilling our own standards is what fills us with pride and self-respect. When the effort-not the results, good or bad-is enough.”
When that is your outlook in life, believe me, you will endure during the tough times. Success is really a journey rather than a destination. It’s the lessons that you will learned along the way that will stick with us the most. They will guide our future decisions in life.
You might not end up where you want to be but if you leave the rest to the Almighty and trust Him and His plans for you, He will always lead you to where you need to be. Just have faith in Him and in His plans, He knows what’s best for you. 😊
Change Your Definition Of Success
If you are having a hard time focusing on your efforts rather than the end results then maybe you should change your definition of success. Coach John Wooden of UCLA basketball adviced his players to change their definition of success. For Coach Wooden, this is what success means:
“Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”
Just Don’t Give Up No Matter What
The point of focusing on our efforts rather than on the results is that focusing on our efforts will teach us to focus on the right things in life. It will teach us the value of patience, hard work, excellence and the like.
It will teach us how to be optimistic. To see the good in our adversities. It will develop our mental toughness. We fail today, that’s alright. We can always try tomorrow. We can always try harder next time.
And if we fail yet again, that’s alright. For as long as you did your best, that’s more than enough. In life, resiliency and optimism is more important than winning.
Losing Is Part Of Life
Losing is part of life. That’s why it’s very important to teach ourselves the ability to cope up with them. Because if we can’t, then they will take over our lives. And that is not good. When you let your losses get in your head, when you let your losses define you, then you will really have a hard time in life.
And we don’t want that of course. I don’t want to see my fellow human being suffer. Because I’ve been there. I know what it feels like to be defeated. To feel small and helpless. I think we all have been there at some point in our lives. And we shouldn’t let others experience that as much as possible. Because it’s not a good place to be in.
That’s why we should help one another as much as possible. Because life is hard. But it ain’t so if we help each other. Also, the good that you do for others will always come back to you. So don’t hesitate to help others with every opportunity you get. 😊
The Effort Is Enough
If you focus your attention to your efforts, to the process, then you are on way towards that peace of mind, sense of contentment and happiness that we are all looking for. Clearly, these things are more important than winning in general terms. We should never attach them to the things that are not within our control. Because that will lead us to an unsatisfactory and unhappy life.
When you know that you’ve done your best, no matter what the result is-good or bad- you are happy. Because you know you have given it your all. And that is more than enough. That kind of mindset will get you going. So don’t give up okay? Your time will come soon. 😊
