“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”– Leonardo da Vinci
Whatever it is that you do, simplifying things down to their very essence will pay off in the end.
If you are a martial artist, you know that boiling things down to their very essence is important. A fight is dynamic, it changes from moment to moment.
If you are stuck in a set of fancy moves and patterns, you will definitely lose the fight because you are thinking about patterns and sequences. But if you boil things down to their very essence, to see a punch as a punch. To see a kick as a kick. Then you will be free.
Don’t Think, Feel
As Bruce have said, “Don’t think, feel! This is very true for a fight, if you think about patterns and sequences you will definitely lose because you are more concern about the movements and patterns rather than the actual fight.
But if you choose to ‘feel’ things, to see things as they are, then there is a high chance that you will win the fight because you are focused on it, not on a set of patterns or movements.
Direct To The Point
This is where boiling things down to their very essence comes into play. The more simple your skill set are, the better. Why? Because they are direct to the point. They get the job done. There is no clutter, therefore, less thinking and more ‘feeling’. The movements come naturally. They are not rehearsed.
This concept is perhaps better conveyed by this quote from Bruce Lee:
‘A good martial artist does not become tense, but ready. Not thinking, yet not dreaming. Ready for whatever may come. When the opponent expands, I contract; and when he contracts, I expand. And when there is an opportunity, “I” do not hit, “it” hits all by itself.’– Bruce Lee
Now, how does this concept translate into our daily lives. Our lives are like series of battles and fights too. Everyday we are bombarded with different stimuli which require us to make decisions after decisions. Often at a moments notice.
That can be pretty harrowing and draining. This is where simplifying things comes into play.
The Very Essence Of Things
If we can strip down things down to their very essence, what would we get? This is the question that we should ask ourselves everyday. This makes our lives a lot more simpler.
Before you buy something, before you do anything, ask these questions to yourself first: Do I really need this? Can this thing contribute to my ultimate goal in life? Which leads me to the next point that I want to talk about.
What Is Important To You?
Know what is important to you. What is your ultimate goal in life. This can make things a lot easier for you. Especially in your decision-making process because you know what is important to you and what isn’t.
Simplicity = Brilliance
Now, you may ask, why does simplicity leads to brilliance? There can actually be a lot of possible answers for this question. But if you will ask me, I believe that it does lead to brilliance because you get to simplify things. You will get to know what’s really important to you. It also helps you save your energy for the ‘more important’ things in your life because you make less decisions and thus avoid decision fatigue. Then you can focus all your energy on that ‘important thing’, your ‘life’s work‘.
